Studies Shed Light on Merits of Montessori Education

Today there are some 500 publicly funded Montessori schools across the United States, up from fewer than 300 in 2000, according to the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector. The number of private Montessori schools, estimated to be around 4,000, is rising too.

Yet there’s been very little research to prove that children learn more in Montessori schools than traditional schools. Recently, two peer-reviewed studies were published. The research found that children in Montessori schools had much higher math and literacy scores than the those in other schools. Montessori students also showed higher levels of motivation and scored better on measures of independence.

Why is Montessori leading the way to better education? One theory is that gifted educators are particularly drawn to Montessori philosophy and study for the extra certifications. Montessori also seems to work quite well with younger children.

“After more than 100 years, we now know the Montessori method is time-tested,” says Puja Patel, Head of School at Triangle Montessori Academy. “While we don’t take much time comparing ourselves to traditional schools, we know that we have great teachers and that our students leave with benefits that last a lifetime.”

Triangle Montessori Academy is a Cary preschool emphasizing art, mathematics, practical life, Spanish, yoga, meditation, and music. The private, year-round school was founded in 2008 and accepts children from 18 months old up to six years old. The school is a member of the American Montessori Society and all teachers are AMS-certified. Students at the school are exposed to Montessori-style teaching approaches, including individual learning according to each child’s style and pace, multi-age classrooms that allow children to advance when they are ready, and a nurturing of students’ natural curiosity.
