How Montessori Education Promotes Individuality

In the Montessori method of education, students are given more freedom to choose what they learn. In addition, many lessons are disguised as fun activities so the students don’t necessarily know they’re being instructed. Student self-esteem is a prime focus and competition isn’t encouraged. Students ages 2-6 years old benefit from “uninterrupted work time.” Students are stimulated and excited to learn without any outside rewards.

“We encourage the student to grow as an individual in various ways,” says Puja Patel, Head of School at Triangle Montessori Academy. “We want each child to feel special and find the freedom to express themselves. Our art, simple math, and organization activities become fun to them and make learning a more natural process.”

By comparing the methods of traditional education and the Montessori style, one thing becomes clear: conventional schools are fine for many people with many merits, but not every one is the same. With an authentic Montessori education, like the one offered at TMA, the method is almost always the same.

One great example of the benefits of Montessori is the avoidance of “screen time.” With most traditional schools dependent on computer-aided classrooms, students at Montessori schools are encouraged to explore the outside and are taught an overall respectfulness to nature. They are taught about caring for the environment and caring for overall life.

Triangle Montessori Academy is a Cary preschool emphasizing art, mathematics, practical life, Spanish, yoga, meditation, and music. The private, year-round school was founded in 2008 and accepts children from 18 months old up to six years old. The school is a member of the American Montessori Society and all teachers are AMS-certified. Students at the school are exposed to Montessori-style teaching approaches, including individual learning according to each child’s style and pace, multi-age classrooms that allow children to advance when they are ready, and a nurturing of students’ natural curiosity.
